I work at a restaurant in a state where it hasn’t become mandatory for restaurant workers to wear masks. Corporate has said that they don’t recommend masks but won’t stop anyone from wearing one if they want to as long as they follow certain procedures.
After seeing several grocery stores and restaurants around us move to wearing masks, I decided to bring a mask in that my mom made for me as a test run. I wanted to see how comfortable it was and if it would be difficult to communicate.
I told my manager that and showed him the mask, and he basically rolled his eyes. He didn’t keep me from putting it on, but he made it seem like it was the stupidest idea. He thinks covid isn’t a big deal and when I tried to explain why it was (people don’t know enough, people we thought would be fine aren’t) he told me he didn’t care.
I’m worried that if I continue wearing it, it’s going to make my work environment uncomfortable, or it could influence how many hours he gives me.
I thought it would be nice to show the customers coming in wearing masks that we care by wearing them too. Plus I think more widespread mask wearing could help our community open up more, but now I’m just scared of what to expect from work.
