Tips for an interview for which I don’t even know the specific role

I used to work at company X many years ago and left that industry (finance) a few years back to pursue other business interests. I wish to return to the industry. A friend who I used to work at company X with years ago, is now a manager and has asked me to meet his boss. I have no job spec that I’m applying for so it’s a “just meet my boss” kind of interview.

I am unemployed so I badly want a job for money and I don’t exactly have firms queuing to interview me. I want my foot back in the door in the industry, so my plan is to do a job I’m not probably that keen on for a couple of years and then move on internally. I’m doing some research and its some specialist finance area that I have no direct experience in but I’m willing to learn. It’s troubling me that I have no idea what I’m interviewing for but I want the job anyway.

Any tips on how to play this? And suggestions on sensible questions to ask them?
