Hi, I hope this is the right forum to post in and sorry if it isn’t.
I‘m about to graduate with an English Lit degree (I’m in the UK) and while I’ve enjoyed it and gained soft/transferable skills, lately I’ve been feeling quite depressed, inadequate and inferior knowing the content I‘ve studied isn’t applicable/useful in real life. In school, I didn’t mind science but wasn’t that interested in it and probably only got good grades because at that level you could just memorise and regurgitate textbook answers. Maths was one of my least favourite subjects and I was only average at it so I don’t think I would have been successful doing a STEM degree. Teachers just said to do what you’re good at and what you’re interested in and my interest and skills were always in the humanities. Most grad schemes in the UK require a 2:1 or above in any subject so I know there are a lot of options for me but I still worry I won’t find a good job and earn a comfortable living because I didn’t pursue STEM, but I also feel like this ‚STEM or nothing‘ mindset is a bigger concern in the US...I might be wrong though. I guess I’d just like some advice on how to stop feeling like this, thinking I should have pursued STEM and feeling inferior to those who did :/
