So I left my first post college job after a year and a half in October. I went to a new company in a completely different field to try something new. Long story short it was a bad decision and I regretted my decision to leave.
I regretted it so much I reached out to my former supervisor to ask about any openings at my old company. My supervisor had also left the company shortly after I did but she tipped off the VP of the company that I wanted to come back and the VP contacted me directly to offer my job back, which I accepted.
I know the company will normally send an email announcement out in advance to let everyone know that I’m coming back, so it shouldn’t be a complete surprise when I’m in the office tomorrow.
I was pretty mum when I left about where I was going when I quit and I didn’t down talk the company. With that being said, I also wasn’t that close with a lot of people I worked with, I was cordial with them.
I’m happy to be going back to a familiar role but I am nervous. I’m worried about some people will not be that welcoming. Specifically because the company usually doesn’t rehire people who quit (I somehow got lucky) and there is one woman that is a senior employee who’s husband also worked for the company at one point and later left, and he has been refused a chance to come back.
Additionally I don’t really want to have to explain why I’m back. I know I’m probably going to have some people asking me what happened and why I decided to come back. I do feel embarrassed and a little stupid that I made a poor career decision and have had to return to a company I thought I was moving on from.
How should I handle questions? Should I go out of my way to be friendly and euthusatic about being back?
