To preface this, I am 20f and work at a fast food franchise. I've worked here for 2 years as of this month and have been a shift leader for almost a year now. I really like the environment I work in, but I don't believe I'm being paid fairly for the work that I do.
To give some backstory, we have had trouble hiring older workers and are hiring high schoolers. My manager doesn't want to promote them because she's not sure they have the maturity. Shift leaders work mostly night shifts, and there's no manager on duty at night so you are basically an acting manager.
Most of the work, obviously, falls on me. I try to teach my crew as much as I can, but recently we have been understaffed and I don't have as much free time to be able to take time off the floor to teach someone something. Customers will wait too long for their food.
My main problem is that I'm simply not paid appropriately. I'm paid 5 cents more than minimum wage in my state, and I'm concerned our new hires are making the same or more than I am. With college, housing, buying a new car, and a special needs pet (that I didn't actually want to adopt, but it was either I take her in or she would've been turned in to the pound to be destroyed), I need to be making at least a couple dollars over minimum wage to make ends meet.
I do, however, feel terrible for leaving my manager in this position. We don't have anyone to take my position, and I know of a couple people who are only still here because of me.
I'm wondering if it would be worth it to even ask for a raise, because I don't think my boss would be able to pay me what I need, and there's no way I could work more hours and still go to school (believe me, I've tried). My other option I'm guessing is to just drop off my two weeks out of the blue, but I'm also wondering how to deal with my manager trying to get me to stay. They have tried to make deals with other employees after they put in their two weeks to see if they could keep them on staff, and I'm not sure how to deal with that kind of pressure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
