I'm applying for a job where a friend works. It is for the same position and I know exactly how much he makes as well as the range he requested when he applied.
Friend requested 110-150, was offered 140, and took it with some other minor negotiating. I need to put a desired pay range into the online app. Do you think the best strategy is to mirror my friend, or can I get away with modestly upping this range without seeming greedy knowing what they've previously offered? I'm coming from the same previous program (a very niche PhD, no previous salary for comparison except a livable stipend) and am highly qualified for the job. I just don't want to screw myself out of the gate on the salary.
edit: and surely relevant, the boss knows that my friend and I know each other
