Application form formats

Like most people I apply for jobs online, often with online application forms - download to my laptop (who doesn't have Microsoft Word) and then upload to Google Drive to work on...then save on my laptop again to be able to send via email.

A lot of the time I notice I need to play around with the forma a little to fit things in and to make it look smart - is this viewed negatively by employers, could it cause any problems with he application process on the employers end?
