I have recently (December to be exact) graduated with a MS in economics. My GPA in this program was 3.493. I have also previously (August 2018) graduated with a MS in economics as well (3.20 GPA). In undergrad, I received a BBA in economics, a BBA in International business, a minor in finance, and a minor in mathematics all with a 3.25 GPA. My plan, up until recently was to complete a PhD in economics, which is why I pursued a master's degree to become a more competitive applicant. Unfortunately, I did not pass the qualifying exams, so I was given a (second) master's degree instead. My first master's degree was more applied and my second far more theoretical.
Now, I'm trying to find a job that hopefully pays pretty well (at least 65K a year to pay off loans and save for a wedding). I'm a pretty good programmer (in my opinion) for an economist and have experience in C++, R, Python, MATLAB, STATA, and VBA. I will fully admit that my programming skills palein comparison to computer scientists or engineers, however.
I have been applying over the past month to jobs in the Atlanta area (I'm getting married there and my fiance will probably do her residency there as well) and have not had any bites, not even an interview. So far, I've tried applying to business intelligence, business analyst, data analyst, and other analyst type gigs. My savings are starting to run out and I have a lease until August. Should I be lowering my salary expectations or applying to different jobs? I'm trying to learn Tableau, SAS, and SQL. Also, I'm considering studying for the actuarial exams and the CFA exam.
All advice is welcome.
