Sending thank you on LinkedIn

Hi guys, I have a question for you: would be acceptable to send a message on LinkedIn to someone just to thank him/her?

I'm an university student, next year I will graduate. I will probably try to get a Master's degree so getting a job straight away is not my top priority.

I have been reading articles, watching videos on YouTube etc. by an expert in the field I would like to specialise in. I found his work genuinely inspiring. Would be strage/akward or appriciated if I sent a short message of gratitude?
