Hi everyone,
I am currently in the second semester of my senior year in college, and I will be graduating in May.
My major is Biochemistry, and I am scared because I know that I do not want to work in a lab for the rest of my life. I had an internship my sophomore year related to environmental chemistry, and I enjoyed it, but not enough to actually want to do something similar as a job.
The thing is, I genuinely do enjoy learning about biochemistry/other science related fields and find it fascinating, but I have always hated lab. Originally, my plan was to attend med school, but at this time I am not willing or able to go into that much debt for it.
I found a love for organic chemistry during my studies and planned to pursue a PhD in that field to eventually become a professor, but at this time I am uncertain of that prospect. One reason is that I had a phenomenal organic chemistry professor all throughout college (who is also my advisor), so I’m not really sure if I truly love organic chemistry or if I just liked having him as a professor. Also, I was advised by a professor that I respect highly to not pursue a PhD unless I am absolutely certain it is what I want to do. I also do not think I could handle the lab work/thesis that goes along with a PhD in organic chemistry, so I think it would ultimately be a mistake for me.
While I do have an interest in biochemistry (I mean I should, it’s my major, right??) I was heavily influenced by my parents to pursue a major in a STEM field, because that was the way I was going to have a secure job, but it now seems to me that if I don’t go to graduate school, the only possible jobs for me would be in lab. And, of course, I realized all of this far too late, so I feel completely stuck.
My true passions lie in fashion, art, and philosophy (I am minoring in this) but I do not know how I could possibly have a stable career related to these with my degree.
So yeah, I’m just feeling lost, so any advice on potential career paths given my major would be appreciated :)
