Another "bored at work" post (kind of). How to better pretend?

Today's the day after Christmas. I had to work today, I literally did nothing except nap on the couch and watch youtube videos (work from home). Then I got bored and went down a rabbit hole about "bullshit jobs" by David Graeber (would highly recommend the NPR podcast episode for others in a similar position) which led me here. Honestly if I wasn’t at my family’s house for the holidays and this was my regular routine, I would have no complaints (I have personal hobbies I can work on at home but not here).

I'm not here to complain about my situation, there are plenty of other threads like that. I'm trying to actively find a way out. I've already decided to switch into a HR career, not because the work will be more busy/meaningful but because I can leverage HR into a work from home position much easier than what I'm doing now. My plan is to find an entry level HR job and then get an SHRM certificate and leverage that into a full-time work from home position. I'm a legal assistant and we are rarely allowed to work from home (never for most companies/law firms). I was only allowed to work from home today and tomorrow because I guilt tripped my boss by using my sister’s recent engagement. My boss is also working from home all this week and next week, and her boss (our department head) lives literally across the country. The hypocrisy is palpable (ok maybe I am complaining a tad lol).

The real reason of this post is because I apparently suck at pretending to work. I want to learn how to be productive while I’m at work. I was originally watching youtube videos and trying to learn code (codeacademy) but that quickly got noticed by people peeping over my shoulder without me knowing (cube life). I then read a few books in pdf format but I’m honestly not a big reader so that became kinda hard for me to enjoy. I was then working on job applications / updating my resume/cover letter but that also got noticed by people too (let’s just say my boss knows I’m looking for a way out asap). Apparently I suck at hiding what I’m doing but at the same time there’s nothing for me to do so I don’t know how to do something else while maintaining a semblance of work. Any advice from the pros that have been doing this for years? What techniques do you use to hide what you’re doing? I try to use smaller windows and alt+tab out when I see people, but sometimes I don’t notice until they’re already too close or if someone’s just walking by real quick. I’ve essentially been caught at every point, so I’m looking to learn how to be sneakier about it.

TL;DR: I have one of those boring jobs where I do 1-2 hours of work a day, but have to pretend to work the whole time. How do I do other things (like youtube / reddit / codeacademy / apply to other jobs) without getting caught?
