What exactly is the “Professional Attire” that I am supposed to wear to my interview tomorrow? Also, should I leave my current job for this one?

Hello! 18f here, I graduated high school in June and I’ve held a job at Staples for 2 years. I’m not trying to leave, necessarily, as they put me in supervisor training and my work in the Print and Marketing Department builds good experience in my desired career path after college.

I would consider leaving however for several reasons.

The first and biggest being that our location is speculated to close next November. This generally means that unless you are a GM or AM, they are unlikely to transfer you to another store, and even then not guaranteed.

The second being that I kind of really don’t like the company. They push metrics, and punish you for not reaching their insane goals. The metrics that they push breed immoral and unethical sales behaviors. Sales managers are replaced constantly because of not hitting the right numbers, or doing so unethically, and they fail to alter expectations. Granted, our store is particularly bad at hitting them, since we are so low volume.

However, I can foresee myself sticking with this job and holding out only if I’m a Supervisor. This would get me about $14 an hour and a full time position. The likelihood of that happening is I would say, about 50/50. But even if I got in that position, again, the chances of our store location closing are rather high, unless our new management can turn this place in a total 180.

So I’ve been applying to jobs. Just to see what’s out there and what I can get. I got an interview for a company at the local Outlet Mall. From what I gather, it seems like a sales position for vacuum’s/carpet cleaning. They’re desperate for hires. The mall is pretty low traffic, aside from the holiday season. In our email correspondence we set up an interview for tomorrow and I was told to dress professional.

However, I’m 18. My only job has literally been Staples. I wear blue jeans, all black sneakers, and a bright red Staples work shirt. My wardrobe itself is literally two pairs of the exact same jeans, basic T-shirt’s and long sleeves, cardigans, and then I only have a pair of converse, my all black nike work shoes, and a pair of Birkenstock’s.

I’m not too excited about going out and potentially spending money on dressier clothing, especially for a job I’m only somewhat interested in. (The money’s supposed to be better, between $13-$17 an hour, plus commission. I refuse to leave this job for something under $14 though).

Are the clothes I have okay? I feel like a fitted black long sleeve, with a cardigan and a pair of dark blue jeans is okay. But the shoes? Not so much. What kind of shoes are appropriate? I don’t want to waltz in there in a pair of heels or something, would flats be okay? I don’t really know what I’m doing or if the top/bottoms are even okay. I hate dress pants with a passion, and idk where I’d find a decent skirt (ew). I don’t even know how to find decent dress pants.

Also do you think I should leave my current position to go to the sales one? I want to work in marketing/advertising after college so I feel both could provide some benefit.

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks you!
