Given how many jobs have hundreds of applicants with easily five to twenty with relevant experience for the specific job, it’s very difficult for someone who doesn’t have experience in that field transfer to a different field.
Networking only gets you noticed by the hiring manager. You still have to outdo all the hundreds of people applying for the same job and it’s much less risky to hire someone who has the relevant experience(and often times any job no matter how entry level has a number of candidates with that).
In the past, we didn’t have LinkedIn which makes it easy for anyone from all over the country apply for a role. Back then it was a much bigger challenge to even find someone who matched the role even 50%. Today, it’s sadly much easier to find people with relevant experience.
