Sorry if this is a basic question but it's literally my first job.

Is it appropriate to ask for reference if my former employer wants me back?

Today I got a message asking "hey, have you found a job yet? We miss having you work at our company!"

I don't want to go back to that company, but at the same time I would like a reference for future jobs. How can I do this politely and professionally?
