I graduated college with my BA in Geography. If I could do it over again, sure, I'd have picked something different. I wanted to work for the U.S. Census doing demographic studies. That didn't pan out, and somehow I ended up in the fields of inventory control and supply chain analytics.
I've worked for two regional airlines, a major worldwide corporation, and now a smaller company that does military/government contracting. I'm an inventory controller/supply chain analyst, essentially a human-Excel hybrid with little creative license or opportunity to escape the 9-5 office bubble.
My work is a constant source of stress in my life. I'm currently in a partial hospitalization program to address my mental health struggles, as the stress overload, lack of fulfillment and deep disinterest in my current job brought me to the brink. I've dealt with depression before but ever since entering this field, it's been almost insurmountable. My program ends in a few days and eventually I'll have to return to my current job (FMLA) but you can probably guess how much I'm dreading it. Just the thought of it alone is enough to push me back in my progress or impede my treatment - but I'm determined to not let that happen. I'm a perfectionist, especially when it comes to work, so if I actually can find something I love (or at least like) doing, it'll have a positive affect on my self-esteem and sense of self.
At this point, it's very clear to me that I need a change in career path. I'm 30, have some money saved up, and if I want to get out of supply chain as an industry, is there anything that could utilize similar skills I've developed through my entire post-college career? I don't want to totally start over, but also... I do. Also, I can relocate. I need to find a middle ground, for my own long-term health and fulfillment. Easier said than done, right?
