I’m a recent college graduate, heading to grad school in the fall. I chose to attend grad school only a week before finals, which left me with little options for work between undergrad and grad school (degree is in engineering). My father owns a small manufacturing business ($2-5M/yr, ~10-15 front office employees, ~20 blue collar factory employees), and my family has been trying to convince me to work there over the summer.
I’ve always avoided the business for the most part, partly because the industry is just not interesting to me, and partly because I feel like I get treated differently by everyone because I’m the boss’s son. If I worked there, a large part of my summer would just consist of learning how the business operates, so that, if something were to happen in the future, I would be knowledgeable enough to step in and run the business or whatever. I’d likely step into an actual job after a few weeks, whether that is industrial engineering type stuff, project management, or something like bidding.
I’ve still been on the fence about committing to work there, mainly because I hate the vibe that I get from everyone else while I’m there. Is that a valid concern? Or is that just the nature of the situation, and something that I shouldn’t let deter me? I have another option for stuff to do this summer, at a family friend’s business that I worked at in high school, but I feel like I really should work at my dad’s business, even if I may not want to. Besides just being a genuine person/not acting entitled, is there any tips to avoid that feeling of being treated special if I do work there?
