Hey guys, so here’s my pickle:
Long post, tldr at the end.
I just turned 21. Ive been working at my job since January of this year. It’s a manager trainee/sales role. I have several gripes with it, like having the top sales in my district every month I’ve been here yet still only getting the minimum commission payout. Like my micromanager who notes every small mistake I make, despite them not being a trend, and calls me out on them while I’m with customers/doing my sales pitch. Like the long hours that make me feel like any resemblance of a work life balance has been shot to shit.
But whatever. I only wanted this job as a resume builder to begin with. I can deal with those things and stick it out for a year to make my resume look pretty.
This last week, however, things have ramped up. My manager left me alone in the office for a few hours the other day, which is fine, albeit stressful. Anyway, I was feeling pressured as there was a line building up in the office, and ended up making a mistake - giving a customer a slightly lower rate than I should’ve. However, this customer ended up being quite a large sale for me, as I tacked on many extras to their initial purchase. My manager ended up confronting me about the mistake, and seemed convinced that I intentionally gave this lower rate in order to make the sale. She told me over and over that it’s considered fraud and that I could get in serious trouble for it. This obviously pissed me off, and I ended up having a heated discussion with her about it. (Nothing personally offensive or raised voices, however.)
Additionally, I had requested a week off in June months ago. I even mentioned it when I was hired and was told that it wouldn’t be an issue. Thing is, I’m going to my brother’s wedding, have my anniversary, am moving, and am going to my girlfriend’s graduation all in the same week. Anyway, my manager called me while I was at home to tell me that she can’t actually give me that week off, despite me confirming with her multiple times that I was in the clear. She said that someone else had already requested it off and that she didn’t notice. Keep in mind, the person who also requested it off is in a position which isn’t even related to mine, but when I mentioned so she told me “It just puts too much stress on the branch.” I told her that it wasn’t fair, as I had already bought plane tickets, made reservations, and made plans which couldn’t be changed. She told me that she assumed that I had already checked with everyone to see if anyone else was taking that week off, then said “You’ve only been here since January, you really need to be more flexible.” Which she followed up with “I’m starting to doubt you even have all these plans, I think you just really want that week off.”
It’s gotten to the point where I dread work just because of the disrespectful, unthoughtful, rude things she says. I’ve been thinking of actually getting a part time job so that I can study for my IT certifications, as I’m good at sales but have never really felt it’s for me. On the other hand, the manager experience I’m gaining would probably look good on a resume, and I don’t want it to seem like I’m job hopping. Does anyone have any advice for me? I’m honestly just not sure what to do. I just want to do what’s best for me and my future self.
tldr: Work in sales/manager hybrid position, boss is a micromanager and reneged on vacation days while also saying rude things. I dread going to work because of her. Should I stay to pad my resume or quit to get a part time job while I earn my IT certifications?
