Reminder: It's okay to turn down a job offer/second interview if it's not sitting right with you.

I am a teacher who is moving halfway across the country. I am currently employed but when I move, I won't be employed (luckily I'll still get paid over the summer from my current teaching position). So I have been on the job hunt since February. I finally was contacted by a school and they wanted to interview me. I nailed the interview and they asked me for a second interview and to set up a way to observe my teaching. They liked me so much that they were willing to bend over backwards, break their normal protocol and allow me to submit a video of my teaching (instead of seeing me teach in person with their students). I thought that this was amazing, but disappointment came quickly.

The principal started making arrangements to contact my administrative references to coordinate the intricacies of me taking a video of my teaching. However, the next day the principal contacted me saying that my timeline would not work for her and that she couldn't wait roughly a month from now for me to make a decision...even though i had not submitted a video to them. I would assume that it might take me a week to submit a video, and another few days for them to come to a decision after the video had been submitted, which would give me roughly 2-3 weeks to decide. The reason I need about a month is because I would like to see the school, meet students, and meet faculty. I also have another job interview scheduled for June 12th which may be an entirely new type of position for me, but within the realm of my teaching degrees and I'd like to see what that position can offer me.

I felt that if that principal were going to be pushy with me, then maybe it wasn't an environment that I wanted to work in. I also had not been there in person, so I had no idea what the facilities, students, and staff were like. I already accepted a teaching job sight-unseen once, and it did not last more than a year due to being attacked by a student twice.

Don't feel pushed into a position. Know your worth. Don't settle. I know for some this may be really hard, or an impossible thing because finances may not allow you to be picky with a job. But if you are looking for a long-term job that you could spend the rest of your career at, take the time to find your perfect fit.
