How I Learned To Love My Job (A comparative story)

Let me present Harry and Louis. Harry and Louis both work at the same company, in the same position for the same boss.

However, Harry gets a pit in his stomach when he thinks about going to work the following day while Louis is filled with excitement as he looks forward to another week of work. So why do these two people who work the same position have two drastically different feelings towards their work?

Let me explain four ways to stop hating your job and avoid the Sunday night blues.

Every Sunday, Harry stays inside and mindlessly watches television, dwelling over the fact that he has to go to work the following day. He thinks about his mounting workload, his upcoming presentation and how he feels like he deserves to get paid much more than he does.

Harry on the other hand, spends his Sunday exercising, preparing meals and getting together with his friends to play video games. The thought of work never enters his mind as he is consumed by how much fun his Sunday has been. So the first way to avoid the dreading the upcoming work week is to turn a boring Sunday into Sunday Funday!

Sunday night, Harry interrupts his girlfriend’s television show and complains to her about how much he is dreading the start of a new work week. He points out how he hates getting up early, how terrible his commute is and how annoying the work can be. He then goes on to whine about how he never should have left his previous job.

Louis on the other hand spend his Sunday night raving to his wife about how excited he is for his upcoming week. He tells her how much energy he has when he wakes early, how he loves listening to his favorite podcast on the way to work and how interested his work assignments are. He adds that he is grateful for his job after having so many bad ones in the past. So the second way to enjoy your job more is to practice gratitude and to start appreciating all the positive aspects that it involves.

On Monday night, Harry comes home and rants to his wife about how boring work is. He complains that his co-workers are lame and that he sits at his desk counting down the minutes until he can leave.

On that same Monday night, Louis comes home and raves to his wife how funny his co-workers are and how much he enjoys chatting with them at work. He tells her that the initiatives he has involved himself in at work make the day go by extremely quick and has helped him grow his network as well. So the third way to enjoy your job more is to get more engaged with your work as well as your colleagues.

It’s now Wednesday night and Harry is at home complaining to his wife about how long the week has felt and how there’s still two full work days between now and the weekend. Harry impatiently awaits Friday night where he can drown out memories of his past work week with one but more likely ten beers.

Alternatively, Louis races home on Wednesday night, excited for his weekly sports night. Louis spends his evening playing soccer with his best friends, getting exercise and enjoying the nice weather. Louis likes to schedule activities throughout the week so that he can enjoy every single day rather than living for the weekend like many of his peers. So the fourth way to improve your view of the work week and eliminate the Sunday night blues is to schedule mid-week activities to give yourself something to look forward to!

Life is too short to waste on a job you dislike and no one should experience constant stress over their position. Take the steps necessary to appreciate or change your job and use those 8 hours a day in a worthwhile fashion!
