Are All Jobs Similar To Working In Retail?

I'm 19 and I'm still trying to choose a career path. My only work experience is in retail. Specifically a large size convenience store where I worked as a cashier and as a merchandiser. I have a pretty bad outlook on what it's like to pursue a career and be gainfully employed, but my outlook might be tainted by my bad experience in the only job I've ever had. Working in retail meant bad hours, bad pay, and annoying customers. The worst part though was not feeling any sense of fulfillment or satisfaction. My job was so easy a monkey could do it, and every day was just a grind to get to the end of my shift, while fighting constant boredom.

Do people actually get fulfillment and satisfaction from their jobs? From my point of view it seems like I'm going to be miserable the rest of my life if every job is similar to working in retail. Working as a Cashier and Merchandiser didn't provide me with a sense of purpose, or that I was valuable. Are there actually careers where you can feel these things? How do you find such a job/career?
