Summer job question

Last year I was an intern at a local elderly care home. I did not end up having a summer job last summer and I intend to work there this summer, I will call them tomorrow. What do I do if they ask about why I didn't apply there/work last summer? I know being honest is important but I don't want to appear lazy or unmotivated to them now because of the lack of a job last year. Any advice is appreciated
