For the last 5 years of my life, I worked for a "black shirt" auto parts store. I started as a delivery driver and worked my way through the ranks to be a commercial manager, and turned down a few offers to run a store (salary position where 70 hour weeks are not uncommon)
Parts store got very very toxic very quickly. Cut to a week ago, I completed my 2 weeks, and started as a parts guy for a car dealer.
I've come to the realization that standing behind a counter isnt what I want to do anymore. I'm happy and content with the pay and schedule at the dealer (m-f 8:00-5:30 @$16.50) but I really miss the customer interaction. At the parts store, I was the guy giving advice on how to fix your broken car when you're out of ideas. My passion is fixing things. I love being the guy who figures out how to fix something when noone else could. At the dealer, I just pull the parts for the people who already know how to fix things.
That said, taking a labor based job is out of the question for me, as I've got 2 herniated discs in my back. I'm doing good fixing my own cars and motorcycles before I'm too sore to continue.
What I'd really love to do, is work at home ideally in a helpful position similar to the parts store. The limiting factor is I dont have any technology experience to the point I feel I could fix your issue (with technology) I can build my own computer, but when it comes to random crashes I'm at a loss and on Google.
I've tried looking for work from home based automotive positions but I cant find anything that's either full time, or pays even close to what I make currently. I'm not stuck on my wage, seeing as I'll be saving a considerable amount on fuel and maintenance costs working from home, but I also dont want a $10/hour job either.
Benefits arent an issue, as I'm on my wifes plan.i just want full time.
TLDR; I'm a parts guy who moved to a dealer and misses being the guy everyone looks for for advice, and I also want to work from home.
Thanks for any advice!
