I recently interviewed for a job that I received a very strong referral for. I first interviewed with the hiring manager and everything went great - he had a similar background to me, and said my resume was pretty much exactly what he was looking for. Within 2 days of the initial interview, I was called back to interview with another 3 people (plus HR). I really felt these interviews went great; I felt I had great questions and answers to all of their questions, and there were no lulls or awkward pauses in the conversations. I know they were looking to fill the position ASAP, and I met with the hiring manager once more before I left the office, where he basically walked me through what the next phases would be (including warning me I would need to submit to a background check and drug screening), and basically told me they would be trying to hire someone by X date.
Well, that date came and went and I did not hear back, so I reached out to HR, who told me there were some delays due to internal discussions, and they should reach a decision by the following week. So, another week came and went, and I followed up with HR again (this past Friday morning), and so far no response. I am really so confused on what has happened; my only guess would be that I am a female and when the hiring manager was talking to me about benefits, I stupidly asked him about maternity leave.
Should I just accept that they likely are going in another direction and move on? My current assumption is that they have probably already extended the position to someone else and are waiting for that person's background/drug screening to clear before they reject the other candidates, but this is just speculative. Or would there be any reason I should hold out hope? There is also a matter of urgency as I am supposed to be travelling to China in a couple months for my current employer and I need to book my travel soon. The hiring manager knows this, so I don't know why they wouldn't just cut me loose if they are going in another direction?
I am just very frustrated and confused at what happened, so any insight would be appreciated.
