Including references on resume/CV?

I was searching for advice on best-practices for references, and I found several articles suggesting that including references on your resume is sort of outdated. Some went so far even to say you shouldn't do this anymore. I'm 31 and have had 4 "real" jobs in my life, and never heard this before.

I'm curious how others feel about this.
