Way to see what past employers say?

I managed a family business for my parents-in-law. It didnt end well and we no longer speak. It's my only experience where i have leadership experience. I'm worried about what they will say if i list the job on a resume. Has anyone ever heard of a service that you can pay to check these things for you? I guess i could have a friend call but i'd rather just pay someone to do it and not bother anyone.
