I graduated college about two years ago and I've been in my current position for 6 months now. I'd like some advice on when the best time is to leave this job.
The title of my position and the job description were very attractive to me when I first applied, as it contained a lot of the work and experience I was looking for in my field. Once hired, I learned very quickly that the job didn't come anywhere close to what the job description stated. My job, according to my boss, is to go around and stalk my employees through various means to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. The job description didn't include supervisor responsibilities, and it was not stated in my interview. I had to ask my first day "So.. they all report to me?" I was then told that the organization would be going through some changes and everyone's job descriptions were being updated. (currently, they are still not updated)
At first I thought the supervisor experience would be a nice resume boost, but my boss constantly undermines me and generally fails to back me up on anything. I have actually overheard him calling me some really terrible things behind my back to some of my own employees.
On one hand, it's a job and I make a decent enough wage. On the other, I'm really quite miserable where I am and I don't feel I'm learning much that will help me in the future. As much as I'd like to quit immediately, I don't want this position to become a black spot on my resume. I have read on this sub that leaving a job too soon might look bad to a future employer.
Before this, I had worked for the same company for 8 years and had a lot of success there. I'm hoping I can fall back on that to prove I'm not hopping jobs. I realize that I could start applying to places immediately, but I don't want it to be a waste of my time. Can I explain to a future employer that I had to leave a toxic work environment and that's why I left so quickly? If I start applying, will a recruiter or hiring manager see my recent short stay at this job and toss my resume away? How long would I have to stay at this job for it to count for anything?
