Throwaway account FYI. I work as a contingent part time park maintenance worker for my local government, and have for the past 9 years. This is mainly due to the job security. I have recently been giving some serious thought into looking into a new career field due to constantly being picked over for jobs.
I have interviewed 7 times now and haven't been picked for any full time jobs. They always tell me I'm considered, but always down on the "list" to be actually picked. People who don't even have a fraction of the work experience I have are being picked over me consistently. I am always told that I interview great by my bosses and interviewers, and that they cannot hire me full time for "complicated reasons".
I will add that this local government has hired people completely unqualified for positions, causing a large amount of Union grievances to be filed by qualified applicants. Job descriptions have also literally been changed to get insiders into high level positions that they are unqualified for. There seems to be a lot of favoritism running rampant, it has been this way since I started. I am not in any Union since they consider me part time, so they cannot help me.
I was also supposed to receive a pay raise every year, and for 4 consecutive years I was not given one. Pay raises for me are only 50¢ so it's barely noticeable, and it took a new hire boss to notice what was happening. This was a big hit to my morale, and I asked them to lay me off over the winter so I could find other work.
My family has pushed me so hard to stay at this job due to the benefits package being so good for full timers. At this point, I'm really thinking listening to them has been a huge mistake. Should I go into another field of work? This seems to be a very common trend in local governments near me. I have also had full time interviews with other local county governments, but had no luck so far.
