I'm interviewing for a position with a company, and I am fairly confident that I will get an offer. I understand that nothing is guaranteed, but this is something good to know even if they choose someone else.
So I'm looking for some advice on salary. I have a friend inside the organization who translated the "Pay Scale X" into a dollar amount for me, so I already know the range that they're looking for the position to fall within. But I'm looking for advice on negotiating.
A little background, it's a position who acts as the go-between for directors to other departments who execute the work, and acting as someone who helps plan the projects. When working with the other departments, I would be taking on a project manager role. The estimated time for that is roughly 50% of the time, the other 50% is spent either training new users on tools and working to address any issues. To give a general idea, the average pay for a project manager in the same location is ~$70k, and specifically, closer to $95k at this particular organization. This position is slated to pay $52k-63k. Knowing that a good portion of my time will be spent as a project manager, that's a lot of responsibility that I wouldn't want to take on for the low end range.
So how would I go about deciding on a salary that took into account the 50/50 time split. Obviously, I'm not asking for the full $70-95k that project managers make, but I would feel slightly short changed spending half of my time doing something that someone make twice as much to do in the same org. Is there a good way to go about figuring out how much to ask for, and even then, a good way to phrase the request for more? I can't say I've ever negotiated a salary before, so it's new territory to me.
