I’ve just learned my team is being outsourced. Someone, me, will need to train them on how to do our jobs. Should I take the money they throw at me to do this or find a new job before then?
My manager cares a lot about his team and he’s been fighting this inevitability for a while now. But he was nice enough to inform me, confidentially, that our IT infrastructure department will all eventually be outsourced and that our Service Desk team, that I’m currently on, will be the first to go. My manager is already looking for a new job and will most likely be gone in the next six weeks. He’s also transferred as many of our team to other positions that will be safe from this as much as he could. He hasn’t been able to find a position for me.
My dilemma is that someone in our office will have to train the outsourcing company how to do our current jobs. They will be choosing my office to come train at since our office is the main IT office. I will be the only service desk person in our office once my manager leaves, so they will be coming to me to train them. Most likely they will throw a lot of money my way to get me to stay in order to train them. But if I do train them then I’m essentially teaching them how to replace not only me, but all of my teammates. This goes against my morals as I care a lot about my teammates but at the same time I know I have to do what’s best for me. I’ve already been approached by my Director claiming that they will be giving me a raise soon. He also seemed to drop some hints that he doesn’t have a problem with me looking for other jobs but to let him know first. By the way, that Director is my managers boss and is also looking for another job.
It should be easy to find a new job, I have a few years of experience now doing IT work and I live in one of the hottest cities for tech jobs in the country. I’ve also been fortunate enough that our service desk doesn’t do what typical service desks do, like just password resets and troubleshooting office. Which this new company thinks we do and will get to find out just how much we actually do.
So finally, should I take the money they throw at me and train this company that’s about to take my friends and my jobs? Or should I find the first job out and take it? There’s also a decent chance I can go work with my current manager once he finds a new job.
