I will no longer be needed at my job in a month's time. How should I approach this in a way that is beneficial to me?
Hi everyone. I'm college student and a night janitor at an office building through a small cleaning company. I have worked there for 5 months.
My boss is the son of the owner. He just informed me that the business occupants are relocating to a new building and no longer require the cleaning service. I will technically be employed until March 15th, but after that I am "no longer needed"? I asked if there is another building I could clean in place, but he just sort of brushed me off. So I guess my time as an employee with them will be ending as well.
I am paid salary, so even if I am there for 2 hours to clean, I am paid for 6 hours of work per night. My boss told me that I will be compensated as normal up until the March 15th date, even if there is nothing to be cleaned at the building as there are less and less office workers there.
The boss/owner's son had this cheerful look in his eye telling me that I could apply for unemployment and "could live off that for months". I was confused by this. Would I even qualify for unemployment? Why would my boss seem to want me to be on it?
My biggest questions are: should I bother sticking around at the company? Should I begin looking for another job and just start before March? Can someone explain the unemployment aspect? Thank you for your time!
