A company extended a verbal offer to me asking for my salary requirement and promised to send me the written offer by the end of the day. After talking to a former intern, I found out she was paid $40+ hourly with free corporate housing. The job I applied for was full-time employee. Based on their intern compensation, I figured a full-time employee might be paid $150-155k and put that down as my target salary.
The company later contacted me and said they couldn't afford my salary expectation. They didn't give a counteroffer. I reached out to them again letting them know I am still interested in the offer and asking what range they had in mind. I know for a fact they saw my message. But they didn't reply.
Was my initial request that unreasonable? And what to do?
