How do they respond if my expected salary range is too high?

Interviewed for a HR Generalist position. There are lots of responsibilities for this role. I have five years of HR manager experience.

Last week:

Monday: Interviewed with the director of HR. Went well. She brought in the VP, also went well. 10 minutes after I left, she emailed me asking for references.

Tuesday: My references were contacted via email to schedule a time to chat.

Wednesday: Two of my references spoke with the director of HR. Went well.

This week:

Monday: I followed up with the director of HR. She said she’s out of the office and the VP has been traveling but will have an answer this week.

Tuesday: Job posting comes down.

Wednesday (yesterday): The director emailed me about my salary expectations. Market range is around $60-80K in Los Angeles. I asked for $75-80K and open for discussion.

No response on Thursday.

I’m now worried that I aimed for too much salary and they’ve dropped me. My friends said it’s only been one day and that they need time to discuss internally.

I’m hoping that they come back with a counter, even if it’s lower than my range, I’m willing to discuss it.

If my range is too high, wouldn’t they tell me something like “your range is too high, xx is the highest we can pay, etc etc, it’s lower than your range, are you still interested, etc.”

Thoughts?
