As a recently graduated Engineer. I wonder why everyone at my engineering firm stays at work for 9 hours?

I’m not trying to say I’m some 200 iq fresh outta college engineering GOD (far from), but why are people staying from 8-5 pm when they take a 30 minute lunch?

I will stay at work from 8-4pm, bring a lunch, and eat/work the same time. Especially if it means I get to leave on time. Hell, I’ll show up and turn a project that requires 25 hours, into one that takes 20 hours. Even if that means tuning out everyone, and listening to music. I don’t care, I’ll do everything to make my 40 hours efficient.

I also, understand that in engineering you have to stay late for some projects. However, staying an extra 30-60 mins for no reason, like I have been seeing, is useless. Are people ok wasting large portions of their life sitting around at a computer working?

I don’t understand, because:

1.) I’m going back to get a masters soon, and work at the same time. I can’t stay late for shits and giggles.

2.) I’m writing a book.

3.) I have friends, family, and a girlfriend.

4.) I work out a lot.

5.) My career is important, but my mental and physical health are more.

Maybe Reddit can teach me why?
