Two majors, trouble finding a full time job. Do you know of a good fit?

Hi all,

I’m (f22) currently helping my partner (m23) in his job search, because it’s gotten discouraging. He double majored in English and Pure Mathematics in undergrad (graduated last spring), and has experience working in IT customer service and has had 3 cook or food service-related positions. In the long term he’s hoping to become a professor, but right now it’s hard for him to utilize his pure math skills in a job because they’re so abstract–right now he’s working part time as a tutor but the hours aren’t enough. He’s looking for a career, not just a job, at the moment so he can save money and build skills before starting a graduate education.

He hasn’t had much applied math experience, so he’s not qualified to work with data or be an analyst. He’s a good writer and critical thinker, and has a good amount of customer service experience and great communication skills. He hasn’t had any office experience but he’s a quick learner. I’ve been trying to help him find good, full time positions that he’s qualified for, but I’m struggling to find positions that utilize his skill sets beyond food or retail. He has IT service desk experience but I haven’t found any open positions he’s qualified for in our area currently (Providence, RI). He’s looking into teaching jobs, but needs to get his cert. He’s also hoping to trade the food service world for more of an office-type job though he has a good amount of experience with food.

Has anyone with pure math or English degrees found jobs that are a good fit for them, that might work with my partners experience? We’ve done a lot of looking and don’t know where to turn to find him a career that he’s qualified to start.
