so i'm 22, just graduated from college, and working my first postgrad job by working at this upscale restaurant. i was actually based in their cafe section but basically just typical food service stuff, albeit with decent tips.
i've been working here for about a month and was suddenly let go yesterday without warning. the owner basically showed up at the end of my shift and was like hey, i don't know how to tell you this, but this isn't going to work out. he looked like he felt really bad and i was floored. i worked in the food industry all through college and consider myself a very efficient worker, friendly with customers, all of that.
the only thing i can think of that led to this was that the day before yesterday, the guy i was working with was being a complete dick and berated me in front of a customer in line. he's a so-called veteran of the establishment and has been at the cafe/restaurant since it opened and loves to flaunt that. well, he completely got on my case about something ridiculous, i think it was not putting a little serving spoon next to the espressos we serve quickly enough and interrupted my transaction as i was finishing up an order to say so in a very harsh tone. the customer was literally like "uhh is everything ok here?" and man i was so fucking humiliated.
i played it off like it was nothing but was pretty quiet the rest of the shift. this dude loves to talk about random BS that isn't related to the job whatsoever, he'll even leave his station to sit with customers at their table, and normally i'll humor him conversationally but i just wasnt feeling it then. he eventually noticed and was like "what's the matter buddy cat got your tongue?"
well we were in the dishpit at the same time a short while later and i was basically like "dude, i didn't appreciate the way you spoke to me earlier. i think you could've done it in a different manner at a different time. you berating me like that over something minor in front of guests makes all of us look pretty unprofessional." and he just rolled his fucking eyes lol. i'll interject here to add that i'm kind of a doormat and RARELY am assertive but i just felt like i had to say something.
well the next day (yesterday) i was fired. i'm pretty sure this event had something to do with it as i was doing just fine before - i was receiving great feedback and regulars were starting to recognize me despite me working relatively few shifts to start. the fact that my manager and two coworkers gave completely different reasons as to why i was let go (availability, level of experience on their fancy machine which i actually know how to operate, etc.) makes me more suspicious. they are trying to hire for the restaurant, particularly the cafe part, like CRAZY right now and the fact that they'd rather be short one more person instead of have me on for another month or so makes me feel 100x worse.
yeah idk i just feel like absolute dogshit now, that's what i get for standing up for myself i guess
