Is it better to be unemployed temporarily while job searching or immediately going to a staffing agency?

I’m about to put in my two weeks’ notice with my job without another lined up. Would it be better for me to just stay unemployed for a few months while I dedicate my time to job hunting (I can afford to do this for a little bit), or would it be better to find some temp work with a staffing agency while I search so there are no gaps in my resume?
