How long should i wait to follow up after an interview?

I had an interview for a better paying more professional version of my current job. Everything went perfect i think and he even had me filling out the criminal record consent so i think i got the job. He said he would try to let me know by today and i felt like i would sound too desperate if i called today. Is it fair to call tomorrow?
