Hi, I made a throwaway for anonymity but here is my story:
I am the accounts payable dept. for a small company (about 20 people in the office). I despise my job.
I got a job offer from a company that I'd really, really like to work at. I accepted their offer, put in my two weeks notice and thought all was well. The CEO calls me into his office to remind me about a "retention agreement" that no one ever told me about and asked if I was really going to forfeit the money when the company sale will be finalized at the end of March ... my new job will start mid-February. The retention bonus is pretty great. I have $9,000 in student loans remaining and the bonus would be around $8,000. A nice dent in that loan, but I can't even think of any good reasons to stay there. My co-workers are older (I'm 23, they are all in their mid-late thirties some 40 or 50 with families) and I can't relate to any of them, nor do they even speak with me. One of my closest "friends" there was a nice lady, we always talked about our lives and stuff and one day she just blew up on me saying I don't treat her with respect because I swear around her, but she swears too and we've been talking casually like that for the past 6 months. My manager also calls me out in front of all my co-workers and embarrasses all of us whenever we make a mistake. My job is monotonous and I don't even like accounting even though I studied it in school for "the money". I start at 9am, finish all my work by 11am and sit there with nothing to do until 5pm. Even asking for more projects, I get those finished pretty quickly too. I just work fast I'm not sure what else to say. My point is, i don't think the money is worth the amount of stress and distain this job gives me, but why try to lure me back into staying with this money proposal when, once the company is sold, many of us lose our job security (I was told this in my interview when I first started at the company only 6 months ago). I know it's not for me. I just keep having this scary feeling in my gut that I should stay and take the bonus to help out with my loans, but is it worth being miserable for a year and a half? If I continue on with this new job, I will have my loans paid off by the end of the year anyways. Just having a struggle.

tl;dr they offered me money to stay at a job I don't like and I feel bad about not taking it.
