I applied to be a diplomatic security special agent with the department of state. As with a lot of government work the hiring process can take a long time (up to 2 years) and there is no guarantee that I will get in. Currently I am finishing up my masters degree in a year from now and I am looking at my options. I spent 8 years in the Marines and I think I would fit in the police force just fine, and it would look good on an application for diplomatic security agent if I don't get hired and need to reapply. I would even continue with the force if I never got hired. My main concern is going through training and becoming an officer only with the expectation of jumping to DSS given the chance will be frowned upon. At the same time I do need to find work and I would like something that will continue training me for the job I want. Competition just keeps getting stiffer and putting in an application for security forces with "2 year of baking experience" isn't going to do me any favors.
