Long story short, several weeks ago, I received an offer from my 2nd choice company so I decided to call my top choice to check my application here. HR called me and told me that I would need to complete an assignment and only then the final interview (via a videocall) saying I should get an answer by mid-december.
Since I had to choose to either accept or decline the other offer, I asked her how many candidates were left; she told me 4 candidates and 3 positions to fill. At that point I told myself odds were pretty good, so I decided to continue with the application and do the assignment. They took 2 weeks to get back at me and now they want me to go through a 2-hours-long tech interview on-site (I'm abroad, so I'll have to fly). According to glassdoor, most applicants (9 out of 10) on my field did not get an offer, and from what I'm reading of the interview details, what they are asking is far from being easy for just an intern.
I feel I had been lied to, on the application process, but also on the number of candidates. How is it that after a first interview, they already narrowed down 4 candidates although they are a big company that must receive 1000 of applications. And why do they need both an assignment and a tech interview (+ maybe a final interview) to only eliminate one applicant ?
Am I wrong to think that ?
