I'm 20 years old living in North Jersey with my parents but moving out soon. I've been working as a general laborer in Jersey City at a commercial site for a 2 months now and I've come to really love the job. The commute is decent, the pay is $14/hr with a decent amount of overtime so I can live off of it. My foreman has taken a real liking to me being that I pick up on stuff fast, I'm always early to work, I never gripe and I never talk back if hes giving me shit over something, which can happen. Based on that I feel like I have job security here which is really important to me because its getting soon to the point of where I move out on my own. All in all I'm very happy with where I am now, the pay is average and I don't really see any upwards mobility here outside of searching elsewhere for work but I don't mind entirely being I'm going to start taking classes soon to work towards a construction management degree. Simultaneously I'm currently part of the the cement and masonry local 29 union as an apprenticeship, just accepted a couple months ago. My apprenticeship started early September and I just got the call for my first union job 2 weeks ago for a 2 week gig going concrete sealing at a Costco in Bayonne. I talked to my foremen and he promised me the spot back if I leave, which i'm super grateful for and told him I appreciate. Anyway here I am now finishing up this job in Bayonne ready to go back to my laborer job knowing I cant keep this up switching between 2 jobs securely. Which means one or the other. Do I stay in my labor position or should I continue my apprenticeship. Which would be more useful to have experienced in my future career post degree. Any advice thoughts or really anything is welcomed. This might be entirely just a case of opinions on what to do but I'll still like to hear yours.
