Autistic employee showing warning signs of violence and management isn't doing anything, should I just leave?
Hi everyone, first time poster but hoping to get some outside perspective here.
I'm a full time digital freelancer and I actually do very well with it, but cold weather set in and it gets lonely working from home all the time so I decided to pick up an extra seasonal job at our local Christmas fair. Basically my job is to coordinate a bunch of employees who dress up as certain characters to serve refreshments. I make about the same in a 5 hour shift as I do billing 1.5 hours of freelance work so it's certainly not about the money, but it's been a ton of fun anyway!
Unfortunately, last week one of the employees I manage - a 6'5" 30 year old man with autism - had a physically violent outburst. He became manic and enraged at a younger employee, a female in her teens, who declined a hug. He started yelling, became red in the face, and walked around kicking things while screaming that he wanted to kick her head in. The employee was not present for this outburst, however I was. I had a supervisor remove him for the remainder of the shift. I heard later on that after I asked him to leave, he said some inappropriate and derogatory things about me to other employees. I also learned that this was not the first time he had said things like this about me, I'd just never known about it before. My supervisor was notified and I figured they'd let him go.
Shockingly, when I came back the next day he was still there. I became incredibly anxious the second I saw him - heart racing, shaking, etc. He kept glaring at me but was working in a different area that night so we didn't interact. I approached my supervisor to let her know how uncomfortable I was continuing to work with him and she said she would just make sure he wasn't scheduled for my area for the rest of the season but there was nothing else she could do.
So far he has not been scheduled to work in my area, but there have been a couple times when my supervisor has told him he could come into my area before the shift starts to help out with some of the setup (I guess this is something he enjoys doing). This puts me in a position where, if I show up a few minutes early for work, I would be completely alone in a room with him. Today I told my manager that I was not comfortable with her allowing him to do this and she basically just said, sorry, if I don't let him do this he will become agitated, so deal with it.
So now I'm trying to figure out what to do. I hope I'm not overreacting in being afraid for my physical safety, this guy is huge and i'm a very small woman. I can go above my supervisor's head to my boss, however with the end of the season just 3 weeks away I'm not sure it's worth creating such a huge scene over it. I can also just quit, however that would obviously put them in a tough spot of not having anyone to cover my job and it's a small-ish town so I don't want the reputation that would come with burning bridges like that.
