I read through a bunch recent questions that left me somewhat unsatisfied.
So here goes again:
I accepted and signed an offer (probably shouldn't have signed) , told my boss and a few co-workers, and my current employer is desperate to keep me. They are preparing a counter offer with the standard talking points (raise, title change, management responsibilities) . Meanwhile I am trying to come up with what figure will make me want to stay, even though my main reason for leaving was not financial but rather culture/fit, morale, people change, and future career growth. Finances are of course important and the new job offers me a higher comp that's substantial but after factoring in cost of living increases etc. it comes out to slightly higher than what I have right now.
New job role is same as I have now working on somewhat similar things. New company is somewhat a competitor and there is bad blood so I am taking my managers and other co-workers opinion with a grain of salt such as: I would be crazy if I were to take the job and should take the counter offer; Why would you want to move (new job would require me to relocate) to do the same thing when I can get a management role and more responsibility + raise; After a year if you still unhappy you can make the move at a greater level than I am now; New job you have to prove yourself and work much harder etc.. )
Hypothetically if I were to get numbers I liked, if I cancel on my signed offer is that a big no no? I guess that company will never want to hire me again? Alternatively, I was thinking to let them know of my situation to the recruiter/hiring manager but I don't know where that would take me? Has anyone here successfully re-negotiated their offer after having signed it?
I don't have any numbers yet and the counter-offer might not be that lucrative but I thought I would post this question in advance.
I also asked for reassurances I wouldn't get laid of within the year once they have my replacement and I was told companies never do this to people they really want to keep.
Also I didn't seek out the new job, rather they approached me so that probably gives me favorable light in the negotiations at my current company.
