Advice for someone looking at temp/employment agencies?

I'm 30, received my bachelor's about 6 years ago. Since then, I've worked mainly as a barista with some side writing jobs, and a part time tutoring gig that I no longer do. I am looking at making a career change and capitalizing on the fact that I have 6-7 years of customer service experience, along with 1-2 years of Microsoft Office experience in a professional setting. Long story short, the barista gig offers no long-term growth or benefits, so I'm trying to build my experience so that I can land in a better, long-term job.

I have never used an employment agency before, and I was wondering if anyone has advice or would like to share their experiences with employment agencies. Is it better to go in-person? Should I simply submit my resume online and follow-up with a phone call? Or, most importantly, do I need to build my resume up more before visiting them?

What have your experiences been with employment agencies? Thanks all.
