Will They Even Check My References?

I just got an official job offer this week (contingent on background check), but they still haven't checked my references... Will they even bother? One of my references is dicey, so I wouldn't mind if they didn't check, but I'd rather they did it before I start the job just in case. They've had my references for a month and kept saying they would check but never did.
