Uncomfortable asking for references

Hi! I have an anxiety disorder. I'm extremely uncomfortable when I have to contact people, and , among other things, ask for references. Is there a way to go successfully without them as a freelancer or in the process of getting hired? Do you have any (un)ethic hacks how to not deal with them without negative impacts? Or, if this is impossible, how to make this process as short, easy and comfortable as possible?
