Tonight, I received a call from my job interviewer from this Monday, and I ignored it. I found out something that they're doing tomorrow and they might want me to help. Am I being stupid for not calling them back? (Read for more details.)

I don't want to sound ungrateful or childish. I know a job is hard to come by, but please listen.

I applied to a job at the tail end of October on a job site. It's supposed to be an entry level, half-time job that basically anybody can get. Not a fast-food restaurant, though. You just need a high school diploma, and somewhat of an experience in that type of work (they said that, but I've heard high school kids being able to get a job from this company). I don't have actual work experience, but I do have internship experience related to that. It pays a little more than minimum wage. So, I think the average American would make more a month than I'd make a year. This is only for the resume, though, and it's better than getting another internship.

The first telephone interview happened 2-3 weeks ago, but then radio silence. He said on the phone that he'll email me the schedule and whatever information I would need for the job. Never happened, but they finally called me again 2 weeks after that initial call to tell me I can meet for an interview that very evening. He's been the only person I've spoken to, but he said I'll be meeting with someone else.

I don't know why they do things so late, but it was complete darkness outside. And cold. I've never been late for anything, but I couldn't find the building!

She finally called. She told me to just meet up at a restaurant. They didn't tell me this until literally the last second. I don't have a car, so I depended on a family member on their day off from work to drive me there. I usually take the bus, though.

When I met her, it turns out the place is STILL under construction. No one told me that either. I didn't bring money to order food (I know that's stupid and we should have money in our person for emergencies, but I just simply didn't that night and I usually do... just my luck). I had to sit while the people there stared at us for not ordering.

The interviewer had an accent and was speaking low. I remembered in the interview, she said something and then, "Saturday." I just repeated, "Saturday?" and she said, "yeah, Saturday," and then she moved on with the interview to talk about something else about the business for a long time. I spent 90% of the time listening to her than speaking, which is good for me.

I already knew the place is still literally being worked on and it won't be completed until a little before December. She even said she wasn't sure when the business will open, and she doesn't know the start date.

At some point, she said she would have to send me some forms to fill out because it involves having a background check. She emphasized that that's important before I could start working. So I thought, "Ahh, Saturday. By that day, I'll get an email for the form for the background check."

We wrapped up the interview. I asked, "So I'll wait for your email?" and she said "Yes". I assumed nothing will happen until I do the background checks because she said so.

Today is Friday, nighttime. I never received an email from them. Even the email for the schedule and other information that they promised in the initial phone interview never came to me.

My phone rang from an unknown number. I stared at the phone. I missed it intentionally. I do this out of habit because I need earbuds to hear the phone and I need to find out where the phone number is coming from and who is calling me before I answer. When it's not spam, I call them right back. I googled, and it's in the town where the business is. I'm assuming it's my interviewer.

So I went to their little page online. It's their page on the main website of the franchise if you know what I mean. I found a little section for updates.

Apparently, there's an event being held on Saturday morning at some place a little further than where I live. Not at the actual building because it's still under construction. I'd have to take 2 buses to reach there and by the end of the day, I'd spend $7.

My guess is that they'll put out a table and just talk to people walking by to advertise the service/business. I'm only guessing because what was said in the updates on the website. She may have said it to me that there's an event on "Saturday", which was the sentence I missed so that's my fault. But I don't recall her saying that I'm expected to do any of that. I expected to do another job with specific duties that start at least after this month, and it would only happen after a background check.

So the phone call is still left missed and I haven’t called back. It's been almost 2 hours.

I also received another call today from another place for an interview that will take place next week. I think I'd like that job better that pays more and has more hours.

Am I being unreasonably stupid here? I guess on some level I am, but I just don't care to spend $7 traveling to help out at their advertising event when I didn't expect to, and I don't even know if I'd be paid for it. I'm also just a little put off by how last minute they like to do things and how unclear they're being.

TL;DR: A job position I applied to is half-time and pays a little more than minimum wage (which pretty much means in a year, I'd make around what the average American makes in a month). The people there like to do things last minute, and keep me in the dark about a lot of things. They called me tonight, and I ignored it, and I found online that there's some sort of thing tomorrow morning that they're doing. I think it's an open house, advertising event and its location is further than I'd like it to be. I didn't expect to do this, and I don't think it's worth it to travel and spend $7 in bus fares when they haven't sent me any information about anything. So I still haven't called them back.
