Question about interview

So I have an onsite job interview for a position that’s more aligned with my goals. In between the first phone screening with the hiring manager, my current employer decided to let me go for performance issues related to an area that I’m not experienced with. I emailed and asked HR what would be disclosed if future employers contacted them and they said simply employment date and title and no reason will be given for the separation.

If this is all that will be disclosed, could I simply say to the new employer, that the job was not the right fit and I was looking for an opportunity that’s more of a fit to my skills and career goals? I don’t want to outright lie but I also don’t want to provide any additional details if it was not asked. I understand to be honest if pressed about it but is there a reason I should be candid about being let go if it won’t be disclosed by the former employer?
