Should I ask for a raise?

I work at a start up husband and wife firm and I started my job in February of this year. Because it’s a start up, I wear many hats in the firm that’s out of my description. We haven’t had as many cases to keep a sustainable income so my bosses are not getting a regular paycheck and they sound like they’re struggling a little financially especially since they have a 2 year old and another one being delivered next month.

They gave me a bonus of $700 in July when I was in the process of moving apartments and had to pay double rent and I’m getting a year end bonus.

Would it be selfish of me to ask for a raise as well? If not, how much should I ask and how should I word it? I’ve never asked for a raise before.
