Reducing Work Hours To Study - How To Bring It Up With My Boss

Some background on where I'm currently working: I work for an e-commerce business which runs 5 of it's own websites as well as an eBay and an Amazon store selling lots of niche/specialist products.

I've been working full time at the company for nearly 7 years and in that time, we have had a few people come and go but currently, there are only 4 of us working full time that make up the team. My boss is the founding director (who is also the director of a very succesful online marketing company), myself as second in command, a guy who handles customer services and a woman who handles most of the shipping.

In most small teams, there's usually one member whose role is multi-faceted and that person is me. I deal with all sorts of things from researching new products to product photography, managing profit margins, opening and closing, sourcing hardware and software etc. etc. Because of this, I have developed a robust knowledge of the company which I think I can say without arrogance is pretty vital to it's running. I was always taught to make myself as irreplaceable as possible and I feel like I've done that quite well.

Back to the present day: This last year I've mostly been competing with the godless machine that is Amazon and because keeping this profitable eats up so much time, some larger tasks that I feel are quite important to developing the business have fallen down the priority list. This has lead to me feeling pretty unfulfilled at work and in thinking hard about it over the last few months, I've decided that I want to return to full-time study next year in order to gain a degree in computing & IT. In doing this though, I will have to reduce my current work hours from full time, 5 days a week down to 2 days a week.

The degree is a 3-year course which would start in April next year which would give us 6 months to find and train new staff. The new staff wouldn't be on their own after that though as the other three full time members of staff would be here and I would be in 2 days a week to help out and answer any questions if needed.

Going down to 2 days a week would free up 60% of my salary to use towards hiring other staff and getting more hands on deck would enable more efficient 'grunt-work' (if that's the term) which would in turn make the larger, more important tasks easier to get to for the team.

My problem is that this is the perfect scenario for me but I can also see how it would seem like I'm wanting to have my cake and eat it too and I don't really know how to present this to my boss without making it sound that way.

I feel like it would genuinely benefit the company as well and my ultimate goal isn't to leave the company but to return to full-time work after I've earnt my degree, feeling more confident and secure (hopefully) in a new role that takes my new qualification into account but it's really more for my own self esteem and personal development than anything else.

Any advice on how to approach this would be greatly appreciated and apologies for the wall of text.

TL;DR - Want to study full time next year but don't know how to approach the subject with my boss.
